font-family: var( --e-global-typography-text-font-family ), Sans-serif; text-align: var(--text-align);\">1.\u00a0 \u00a0 Evaluate your current Network<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p><!-- \/wp:list-item --><\/p>\n<p><!-- \/wp:list --><!-- wp:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p><em>&#8220;The richest people in the world look for and build networks, everyone else looks for work\u201d \u2013 Robert Kiyosake<\/em><\/p>\n<p><!-- \/wp:paragraph --><!-- wp:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s good to take a step back and take an honest appraisal of your network.\u00a0\u00a0 You might feel you don\u2019t have one but if you\u2019ve ever spoken to anybody, then you have a network.\u00a0 So, is it any good?\u00a0 Can you reach out to your network when you\u2019ve got a need regarding your work or career?\u00a0 Does anyone reach out to you for help or advice?\u00a0 Think about these people that you already know and categorise them into 1 of 4 groups :\u00a0 <strong>Decision Makers<\/strong> (they can strongly influence your advancement), <strong>Mentors<\/strong> (they give you advice and help from their experiences), <strong>Peers<\/strong> (people around your level who you confide in or get on well with) and <strong>Others<\/strong> (interesting people you connect with regularly).\u00a0\u00a0 Rate your relationship with each individual on a scale that works for you.\u00a0\u00a0 Consider a scoring from 0-5 \u2013 a \u20185\u2019 could be defined as you know extremely well and that they think highly of you.\u00a0\u00a0 Now consider your list and notice how many are in each grouping and also how high or low your scores are. \u00a0How many genuine Decision Makers do you have on there?\u00a0 \u00a0This overall picture gives you a view of the health of your current network and shows where your opportunities are.<\/p>\n<p><em><strong><span style=\"color: var( --e-global-color-text ); font-family: var( --e-global-typography-text-font-family ), Sans-serif; text-align: var(--text-align);\">2.\u00a0 \u00a0<\/span><\/strong><strong style=\"color: var( --e-global-color-text ); font-family: var( --e-global-typography-text-font-family ), Sans-serif; text-align: var(--text-align);\">Select your \u2018Targets\u2019<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p><!-- \/wp:list-item --><\/p>\n<p><!-- \/wp:list --><!-- wp:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cKnow where you want to go and make sure the right people know about it.\u201d &#8211; Meredith Mahoney<\/em><\/p>\n<p><!-- \/wp:paragraph --><!-- wp:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p>Now it\u2019s time to start targeting who your next key contacts are.\u00a0\u00a0 If you\u2019ve a focus on career advancement, the <strong>Decision Maker<\/strong> and <strong>Mentor<\/strong> categories are most important.\u00a0\u00a0 Are your scores or the number of people in these categories low?\u00a0\u00a0 If yes, then this a \u2018red flag\u2019 for yourself.\u00a0\u00a0 You need to start actively building your relationships in these areas immediately.\u00a0\u00a0 A great way to do this is to just sit down and brainstorm a list of the potential people who are going to be critical for you to get to know.\u00a0\u00a0 Having 1-2 mentors is probably enough, it\u2019s likely that there will be 5 or more really key decision makers.\u00a0 I recommend creating a Top 5 Target list and a Top 5 Watch list.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 The Target list are those people you want to actively pursue.\u00a0\u00a0 You want to reach out to them and begin or enhance a relationship.\u00a0\u00a0 The Watch list are almost likely your next Targets but they could contain Peers and Others who you feel are interesting or are going places.\u00a0 You may bump into one of them in the corridor or be the first ones on a Zoom call.\u00a0 If they\u2019re on your watch list, you\u2019re more inclined to make an effort to say hello and start an exchange.\u00a0\u00a0 I know this may all sound a bit surgical but you\u2019ll find that over time, your approach to networking will become more natural.\u00a0\u00a0 You will develop friendships and peers from the past are, all of a sudden, new CEOs.\u00a0\u00a0 However, if your evaluation tells you that you\u2019ve work to do then having a structured approach will ensure you spend your precious time on people who are going to have the most impact on your career.\u00a0\u00a0 Lastly, give yourself a goal for how you will improve the relationship with each of the people on your list.\u00a0 Consider maybe a 9-12 month window and use the 0-5 scoring system again.\u00a0 What is going to be your before (current score) and after (goal score)?\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Remember, their perception of you is the most critical thing so tune into that as you consider your scores.<\/p>\n<p><!-- \/wp:paragraph --><!-- wp:list --><\/p>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none;\">\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><!-- wp:list-item --><\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>3.\u00a0 \u00a0 Reach out, arrange meeting &amp; prepare in advance<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><!-- \/wp:list-item --><\/p>\n<p><!-- \/wp:list --><!-- wp:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cThe single greatest \u2018people skill\u2019 is a highly developed and authentic interest in the other person.\u201d &#8211; Bob Burg<\/em><\/p>\n<p><!-- \/wp:paragraph --><!-- wp:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p>Arranging meetings with the people on your Target list is the next step.\u00a0\u00a0 A common misconception is that you need to have a common project or significant reason to reach out and connect. Don\u2019t worry, you don\u2019t.\u00a0\u00a0 You can just send them an email (or whatever means you prefer) and ask them for a 10-15 minute conversation.\u00a0 Say that you\u2019ve admired their work, how they\u2019ve managed to do so well in their careers and that you\u2019d love a few minutes to listen to their story and learn from them as you consider your own career journey.\u00a0 I\u2019ve never heard of a senior person refuse an ask like that.\u00a0 \u00a0\u00a0Once you\u2019ve the initial meeting in your calendar, you need to prepare.\u00a0\u00a0 This meeting is all on you.\u00a0\u00a0 You want it to go well and if you\u00a0 plan it properly, the chances of success are much higher.\u00a0 Consider how you want to open the meeting.\u00a0\u00a0 Having a short \u2018elevator pitch\u2019 about yourself is helpful.\u00a0\u00a0 Maybe a 1 minute summary of what you do and why you\u2019ve reached out.\u00a0\u00a0 Ensure you have done your research on them.\u00a0\u00a0 What companies have they worked in?\u00a0 What has been their progression up the corporate ladder?\u00a0 Do they have any interests that you\u2019re aware of and maybe you\u2019ll even find something in common.\u00a0\u00a0 What questions you are going to ask?\u00a0\u00a0 It might even be a book they would recommend or the best advice they\u2019ve ever received.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Don\u2019t make the questions difficult.\u00a0 Prepare the 2-3 things that you want them to take away about you and your aspirations.\u00a0\u00a0 Above all, keep it simple and make it primarily about them.\u00a0 \u00a0<\/p>\n<p><!-- \/wp:paragraph --><!-- wp:list --><\/p>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none;\">\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><!-- wp:list-item --><\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>4.\u00a0 \u00a0 Make your 1<sup>st<\/sup> networking meeting count<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p><!-- \/wp:list-item --><\/p>\n<p><!-- \/wp:list --><!-- wp:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cCourage starts with showing up and letting ourselves be seen.&#8221; &#8212; Brene Brown<\/em><\/p>\n<p><!-- \/wp:paragraph --><!-- wp:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p>OK, you\u2019re prepared well and are ready to go.\u00a0\u00a0 Whether it\u2019s a video call or face to face, be there a couple of minutes early and ensure you\u2019re dressed appropriately.\u00a0\u00a0 Have your phone on silent, take a deep breath and go for it.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Kick the meeting off with a warm greeting and the \u2018elevator pitch\u2019 you\u2019ve prepared.\u00a0 A good start will help everyone to relax.\u00a0\u00a0 Remember that they are a normal person just like you and they want to enjoy this meeting too.\u00a0\u00a0 Most senior people have big egos.\u00a0 This isn\u2019t a bad thing &#8211; it\u2019s probably been necessary for them to achieve those career heights.\u00a0 \u00a0\u00a0Play into that ego.\u00a0\u00a0 Don\u2019t worry if they speak for 70-80% of the time.\u00a0 Just keep teeing up questions that enables you to get insights but also has them telling you about their best moments and career highlights.\u00a0\u00a0 They will be smiling and feeling very good about reflecting back to these great moments and best of all, you\u2019ll be brought along for the ride.\u00a0\u00a0 When they think back to their meeting with you, it will be a positive, happy memory and they will associate you with that.\u00a0 This is likely to be far more memorable than anything you might have said.\u00a0\u00a0 It is important that you drop in a few key messages about you.\u00a0 You want to leave them with 1-2 of your achievements and also what it is you want to do with your career.\u00a0 I\u2019ve lost track of the number of times, in meetings like these, where I\u2019ve asked the person \u201cso, what do you want to do in the future?\u201d only to receive a blank stare and an \u201cI don\u2019t know\u201d answer.\u00a0\u00a0 This puts all the work back on the senior person.\u00a0 You might not fully know what you want to do but have some ideas and some good questions so you can turn the query into a real positive.\u00a0 Remember, they are an important decision maker so what \u2018seeds\u2019 do you want to plant that they will pick up on that they will remember when that crucial decision making time comes around (promotion, who goes on the Top Talent programme or whatever).\u00a0\u00a0 Be conscious and respectful of their time so plan how to end the conversation.\u00a0 As part of that, it\u2019s always good to tee up a potential next\u00a0 meeting.\u00a0\u00a0 You don\u2019t need to settle on a time or day, just to get them to agree to the idea of it.\u00a0\u00a0 Once you\u2019re on your own again, take another deep breath and give yourself a major \u2018pat on the back.\u2019\u00a0\u00a0 This is not easy but every one you do gets a little more comfortable.\u00a0 You\u2019ll have the odd bad one but that could be that you just got them at the wrong time.\u00a0 Look to continually hone your skills and learn what works and what doesn\u2019t.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><!-- \/wp:paragraph --><!-- wp:list --><\/p>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none;\">\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><!-- wp:list-item --><\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>5.\u00a0 \u00a0 Follow up &amp; repeat<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p><!-- \/wp:list-item --><\/p>\n<p><!-- \/wp:list --><!-- wp:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p><em>&#8220;You can have everything in life you want if you will just help enough other people get what they want&#8221;
